The great thing about 50s style wedding dresses is that they look good on every type of physique – short, tall, heavy or slender. If your bridal party is a mix of sizes and shapes, and you like 1950s fashions, you might consider dressing youself and your bridal party in this versatile style.

The 50s style wedding dress is cut straight across, cinched in at the waist and then flares in a wide circle skirt. The bridesmaid dresses are usually cut short right below the knee.

Nowadays you can get this type of bridal gown in just about every color of the rainbow. For a more contemporary look choose pastel colors like sage or lilac. For a look that is more true to the 1950s, choose bolder colors like royal blue or bright red, or a floral print.

Candy Anthony, based in London, has a gorgeous selection of 1950’s inspired gowns. All the images below are from the store’s Web site. (I love these dresses!) For additional inspiration, check out the A Dress A Day blog.

  3. Sharon,
Thanks for this question! Luckily there are places in the U.S. where you can get a fabulous 1950’s dress.

Post Girl Vintage - based out of California - has some great dresses that you can order online.

Stephanie James Couture, also in California, has some beautiful dresses.

  4. I looooove these dresses. any suggestions for a bride in Canada?!

    hi Chandra,
The dresses are gorgeous, aren’t they? One suggestion is to try an online retailer that sells these types of dresses - one like Vintageous Vintage Clothing. You hopefully will be able to find a great dress - and get a great price. I’ll keep updating Gownella with new 1950’s style dresses as I find them, so stay posted! –Melissa
