You may not have quite looked at this way but your wedding dress is not exactly an ecologically friendly item. Every time one is manufactured it leaves quite a carbon imprint on the environment. This is a fact that is pointed out very nicely by an article by staff writer Dino-Ray Romos in Insider Bay Area. She notes that silk is expensive, uses up a lot of natural energy and also labor and in the end is a dress that is only worn once.
There is an answer in the form of wedding dresses made of hemp. Material made from help is apparently very similar in look and feel. There are a couple of designers who have been working with organic fabrics like this to create custom-made wedding dresses. One of the most important of them is Crystal Millar who designs for a hip eco-aware clothing label out of New Mexico called Conscious Clothing. Here are a few of their wedding dresses.

Some other eco-conciouse weeding dress designers such as Robin Denstin recycle parts of older wedding dresses to make newer ones in order to conserve on energy and natural reserves. She operates a shop called Recapture Vintage Bridal Designs in Oakland California. Here are a few examples.
